Secret hidden beneath painting's surface

After a routine inspection of the Cincinnati Art Museum's prized Paul Cézanne painting "Still Life with Bread and Eggs", Serena Urry (chief conservator) noticed something odd. There were cracks concentrated in two specific areas revealing white paint, that contrasted with the French painter's so-called "dark" period. She asked a local medical company to bring portable X-ray and scan the painting. After stitching the pieces together and turning the final image sideways, she was shocked with what she'd found out. The X-ray scan revealed a figure resembling Cézanne himself. According to Serena- "I think everyone's opinion is that it's a self-portrait ... He's posed in the way a self-portrait would be: in other words, he's looking at us, but his body is turned." Peter Jonathan Bell, the museum's curator of European paintings, sculpture and drawings says that they will "collaborate with Cézanne experts around the worl...

Return of Nasa's Orion capsule

Orion capsule as a part of NASA's Artemis programme was launched uncrewed approximately 3 weeks ago on a journey around the moon. This capsule was built by NASA in order to "carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain astronauts during their missions and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities". After its maneuver possible by its European propulsion module, it successfully pushed itself from the Moon in the direction of Earth. The capsule will enter earths atmosphere at around 40,000 km/h, generating temperatures likely to reach close to 3,000C. According to Artemis mission manager - Mike Sarafin, "This is our priority one objective, for a reason", as it will put the shielding systems of the capsule to final test. It should drop around 09:40 local time (17:40 GMT) with the support of a parachute, targeting a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off California. If the interior of the Orion capsule will be secure, meaning...

Volcano eruption on Java island

Today, in East Java there has been an unsuspected occurrence. Mount Semeru has erupted, causing tremendous fear in the locals. Fortunately, no one was injured, but nearly 2000 people have been evacuated. Authorities gave information, that it began erupting at about 02:46 local time (19:46 GMT). Because of the "hot avalanches" of lava poured from Semeru, people have been commanded to keep the minimal distance of 8 kilometers from the volcano. According to a spokesman for Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), "The increased threat level from three to four also means the danger threatens people's homes". Besides the damage done to houses, it also inflicted a bridge, that is being rebuilt after a previous eruption of Semeru, which caused a series of natural disasters that resulted in many deaths. Fortunately, after the today's eruption meteorologists said no tidal changes had been observed. https://www.bbc.com/news...

Diehard football fans

Two French football fans decided to travel for World Cup placed in Qatar this year a little bit differently. Mehdi Balamissa and Gabriel Martin came to the conclusion that the best way to get to Qatar for the World Cup was on bikes. After their trip from France to Italy, this much harder challenge seemed possible, so as they are both self-employed, they decided to block off three months of their time and come to Qatar. While cycling about 115 km a day with appropriate rest days, the route totalled in about 7000 km. The pair crossed a total of 13 different countries. As can be expected, they came up against some obstacles, but as Martin stated - "In this kind of trip, you have to be really flexible. In fact, the main part of the trip is to be flexible and to just adapt to every situation the best you can. I think we did well, actually. ". In the last bit of this trip, after almost 3 months of solitude, they were joined by French and Qatari cyclists, as well as ...

Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 145 goals in 346 appearances for Manchester United, after 3 years in Juventus, has rejoined his old club after 11 years in August 2021. Despite the fact that he had rejoined the club fairly recently, he decided to leave Manchester United with immediate effect. Even though he stated that "he loves Manchester United and its fans, and that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for him to seek a new challenge. He wishes the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future. ", he decided to end the contract with the club early. Both parties stated that Ronaldo's exit was "mutually agreed". But why did he decide to do that? The main reason he named was the actions and overall character of a new manager - Erik ten Hag, that he has "no respect" for. He said that he didn't spot a lot of enhancement, or as he stated - "no evolution" in the club since the retireme...

Biodegradable computer chips

In current times, a lot of people are starting to acknowledge and put more thought into one of the biggest issues with our today's world - pollution. Even though it is a matter that cannot be resolved instantly, every single step towards stopping it helps. Researchers from the Johannes Kepler University in Austria managed to discover a new use of fungi that can greatly help with this issue. They discovered that Ganoderma lucidum mushroom skin could work as a substitute for the substrate used in electrical circuits (A substrate is the base of a circuit that insulates and cools the conductive metals sitting on top of it. Typically, they are made of non-degradable plastics, which are discarded after use). According to the research paper, the fungi skin is faintly less insulating than plastic, but it still managed to work greatly in electronic circuits. With the thickness similar to a sheet of paper and ability to withstand temperatures exceeding 200 Celsius degrees, it...

Mirrored skyscraper megacity

Saudi Arabia plans to build a new revolutionary city called The Line. This may not be the freshest information regarding recent news, but I personally found it really interesting when I recently found about about it. The Line is the idea to create a new way of sustainable living by creating urban dystopia. It's said to be designed by the current best architects in the world, measuring 500 meters in height 200 meters in width and 170 kilometers long. It's aiming to completely eliminate carbon emissions in the city. Furthermore, it's also said by the developers, that it will be possible for any resident to access every important facility in 5 minutes, as well as travel from end to end in 20 minutes. Even though that the city's construction recently started, all the goals that the city is promised to achieve from zero carbon emission to A.I. maidens and Taxis, in my opinion it seems to be strongly far fetched. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jul/27/saudis-unve...
