According to Yusuf Yunus - one of the Arema fans that "had been watching the match from the eastern stands on Saturday night" reports that the whole incident escalated rapidly. "Their behavior was pretty standard, but within minutes, more supporters left the stands and flowed onto the field, then he heard screams and smelled something in the air." Police intended to control the angry crowd by releasing tearing gas over the stadium, and they even took the measures in controlling the crowd by violence. Hundreds of people tried fleeing from the stadium, but the tragic incident escalated quickly enough to trap some of them inside the riot. According to some fans, the stadium looked like "war zone" and it was really hard for anyone to get a hold of the situation - "I felt it was becoming more difficult to breathe, and my eyes got irritated then I saw smoke coming out from one corner of the stands".
